info
1. Valid photo I.D. (if under 18 years of age, you must have a waiver).
2. Valid Social Security number
3. Testing fee (money orders ONLY - made payable to VISIONS).
First time testers should plan to take the G.E.D. Test over a 2-day period with approximately 4 1/2 hours of testing on each day. Please note, however, that taking all five parts of the Test (science, social studies, language arts - reading, mathematics and language arts - writing) over a period of 2 consecutive days is strongly encouraged; however, not required. Stretching the test over a period of more than 2 days is an option.
After completing the G.E.D. Test at VISIONS (all 5 subjects for first time testers), a person who took the test should expect to wait, approximately, 7 to 9 days before receiving their results in the mail. The wait period may be shorter but, sometimes, the wait may be a little longer. A person who took the test should NOT call the testing center for results as scores cannot (and will not) be given over the phone.
As required by the American Council on Education, to pass the G.E.D. Test and receive an official government issued G.E.D. Certificate, a person who took the test must receive a total score of, at least, 2250 points, with no score on any individual subject of the Test being less than 410 points.
* Please note that earning the minimum passing score of 410 points in every subject will not obtain the 2250 total points needed to pass the entire G.E.D. Test. Per the standards of the American Council on Education, an average score of 450 points per part is needed to obtain the 2250 total points necessary to pass the entire G.E.D. Test. For example: if a person scored a 410 in mathematics, a 470 in science, a 450 in social studies, a 470 in language arts - reading, and a 430 in language arts - writing, the total score would be 2230 and, although no score was less than 410, the person did not score enough total points to earn a G.E.D. Certificate.
Any "non-passed" subject of the G.E.D. Test may be re-taken as many as 2 more times within that calendar year (for a maximum total of 3 attempts to pass per calendar year). If not successful after a third attempt within a calendar year, a person taking the test must wait until the following calendar year to retake any "non-passed" subjects of the G.E.D. Test. No subject of the G.E.D. Test can be taken more than 3 times per calendar year.
With a waiver, a person who is, at least, 16-years-old may take the G.E.D. Test. An application for waiver requires the signature of the applicant's parent/guardian as well as verifiable documentation that the applicant is no longer enrolled in school. For more information or to obtain a waiver application, contact VISIONS at 313-838-3801.
